Thonon unfolds on two levels, between the upper town and the lake. Capital of the Chablais and a water town, it lines up heritage, lively squares and a Lake Geneva belvedere that ranks among the finest on the south shore. The visit blends the way of life of a thermal town and the history of the Counts of Savoy.
The upper town and the Port de Rives
The heart of Thonon, up high, is organised around its squares, the Saint-François basilica and the belvedere overlooking the lake. Below, the Port de Rives gathers the fishing port, the marina and the landing stage, in a waterside atmosphere. Between the two, a historic funicular links the town and the port, a curiosity to try at least once.
The Ripaille castle
Set apart, by the lake, the Ripaille castle is Thonon’s great monument. A former residence of the Counts of Savoy, where Amadeus VIII retired in the 15th century, it’s surrounded by vineyards (the Ripaille AOC), a park and an arboretum. You visit the castle, the estate and its cellars, in an exceptional setting between lake and forest.
