In Thonon, the lake is lived at the Port de Rives, below the town. Between the fishing port, the marina and the landing stage, it’s the ideal starting point to take to the water on Lake Geneva, the largest in Western Europe, facing the Swiss shores.
Cruises and boats
The lake’s ferries link Thonon to the other ports: you can take a panoramic cruise along the shores, or cross to Switzerland (Lausanne, Nyon, Geneva). It’s an experience in itself, as much as a means of transport: crossing into Switzerland by lake is finer than by road. At the Port de Rives, you can also rent paddleboards and small boats to explore the shore.
Fishing port and swimming
Thonon keeps a real fishing port: professional fishermen bring back the fish of Lake Geneva (whitefish, char, perch), found on the port’s tables. For swimming, laid-out beaches line the lake in season, to enjoy the water facing the mountains.
Booking
Cruises and crossings are booked with the lake’s navigation company (seasonal hours). Paddleboard and boat rentals, and beach access, are arranged directly at the Port de Rives in summer.
Good to know
Season. Cruises and swimming are in full swing from May to September; some boat links run year-round.
Into Switzerland. For crossings, bring an ID; Switzerland is outside the European Union.
The funicular. To reach the Port de Rives from the upper town, the funicular is the handiest.
With the family. Short cruises, the port and the beaches suit all ages.
