The Mont Blanc Tramway is one of the great experiences of Saint-Gervais. Leaving from Le Fayet, this historic rack railway climbs the flank of the massif up to the Nid d’Aigle (2,372 m), at the foot of the Bionnassay glacier: it’s the highest train in France. In a single climb, you go from the spa town to high-mountain landscapes, facing Mont Blanc.
What you see
The line leaves from Le Fayet (Saint-Gervais), crosses the Col de Voza and Bellevue, then climbs to the Nid d’Aigle. At the top, you overlook the Bionnassay glacier and the Mont Blanc range, in a mineral, glacial setting. It’s also the starting point of the normal route up Mont Blanc (via the Goûter refuge) and of many balcony hikes. The ride, in vintage carriages, is an attraction in itself.
Booking
The Mont Blanc Tramway is operated by the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc: tickets are booked online on the operator’s site or at Le Fayet station. In high season, it’s best to book ahead and aim for an early departure. The terminus varies by season (Bellevue, or the Nid d’Aigle in summer).
Good to know
Season. The Nid d’Aigle terminus is open in summer; in winter, the Tramway serves the ski area up to Bellevue.
Altitude. The Nid d’Aigle reaches 2,372 m: bring warm layers, even in fine weather.
Hiking. From the Nid d’Aigle, several paths lead to the glacier balconies; mountaineering routes are reserved for properly guided and equipped parties.
Booking. Early departure and a ticket in advance in summer: the line is in high demand.
