Skiing in La Clusaz: five massifs, freeride and ice falls

Skiing in La Clusaz means a large area with a strong character, nestled at the foot of the Aravis. Around 125 km of pistes spread over five linked massifs, each its own playground: from gentle slopes for beginners to the committing faces that freeride fans come a long way for.

The massifs

  • Beauregard: gentle, sunny and wooded, reached by gondola from the village. Ideal for beginners, cross-country and walks.
  • L’Aiguille and l’Étale: the heart of the area, with a fine spread of pistes for all levels facing the Aravis.
  • Balme: the highest sector (up to 2,600 m) and the most committing, which secures the snow and delights strong skiers and freeriders.
  • Manigod: shared with the neighbouring village, quieter, perfect for variety.

A freeride and ice reputation

La Clusaz is renowned for its off-piste and freeride, especially from Balme, to be practised with a professional and suitable gear. In mid-winter, the valley also becomes one of France’s great spots for ice climbing, drawing climbers to its frozen flows.

Booking

Passes are bought from the resort, online or at the lift ticket offices. For lessons, supervised off-piste or ice climbing, contact the ESF, the ski schools and the guides’ office of La Clusaz. Book early during school holidays.

Good to know

Altitude. The village sits at ≈ 1,100 m; low-altitude snow can be patchy, but Balme secures snow up high.

Best timing. January and February for snow, December for the atmosphere. Avoid the peak of school holidays if you can.

Freeride and ice. Off the marked pistes, a professional is essential: avalanche and fall terrain.

Getting around. Shuttles link the village to the lift bases; no need to take the car every morning.
