Avoriaz is the ideal vantage point over the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest linked areas in the world: around 600 km of pistes across twelve French and Swiss resorts. The resort sits at the centre of the area, at 1,800 m, and most of the lodging is ski-in/ski-out: you click in at the door and tip over to France or Switzerland in minutes.
The area
From Avoriaz, the whole cross-border area opens up: Morzine and its Pléney, Les Gets, the Châtel wall, and the Swiss villages of the Val d’Illiez across the ridges. The resort’s altitude guarantees more reliable snow than the valley villages, early and late in the season alike.
Families and freestyle
Avoriaz was designed for families from the start, with its children’s village and playful runs at the heart of the resort. It’s also a freestyle reference: several snowparks, including the famous The Stash, a natural course carved from wood among the trees, and other progressive zones to take up the features.
Booking
Portes du Soleil passes are bought from the resort, online or at the lift ticket offices. For lessons, head to the ESF or a local ski school, and book early during school holidays. The Portes du Soleil pass covers the whole linked area, France and Switzerland included.
Good to know
Ski-in/ski-out. One of Avoriaz’s great assets: you reach the pistes straight from the resort, with no shuttle.
Altitude. At 1,800 m, snow is more reliable than in the valley; dress warmly, it can be cold and windy on the ridges.
Into Switzerland. The area is cross-border: an ID is handy for skiing on the Swiss side.
With the family. A children’s village, playful runs and a car-free resort make Avoriaz a safe choice with children.
