Hiker on a viewpoint overlooking Lake Annecy
Things to do

Hiking in Annecy: the finest views over the lake

Around Annecy, you climb above the water fast. In a few hundred metres of ascent you go from the beaches to high balconies, the turquoise lake spreading out below. The mountains ringing the town offer hikes for every level, from a family trail to a committing summit.

The classics

  • Mont Veyrier and Mont Baron: right above town, the most accessible balcony over the lake and the old town.
  • Roc de Chère: a nature reserve on the eastern shore, easy, with plunging views over the water.
  • Le Semnoz: Annecy’s own mountain, reachable by car up to the ridges, with gentle walks and a panorama of the Mont Blanc massif.
  • La Tournette (2,351 m): the iconic summit looming over the lake, a big full-day outing for seasoned walkers.

With a guide

A mountain leader picks the route to suit the weather and the group’s level, talks through the wildlife and plants, and leads to the best viewpoints. Our selected outings range from a panoramic lake walk to a full-day hike, from our partner.

Good to know

Season. Most hiking runs from May to October. Summits like La Tournette clear of snow later, around June–July.

Early morning. In summer, set off early to avoid the heat and crowds, and catch the light on the lake.

Gear up. Mountain shoes, plenty of water, a windproof layer: the weather changes fast at altitude.

For everyone. From the family-friendly Roc de Chère trail to La Tournette’s 1,700 m of ascent, there’s a level for everyone.
