Cycling around Lake Annecy: the greenway and bike rental

Cycling around Lake Annecy is one of the great classics of the Alps, and one of the most accessible. A greenway runs along the western shore for much of the route, away from cars, right by the water. It’s flat, it’s beautiful, and almost anyone can do it.

The route

The full loop is about 40 km. The western shore (Annecy to Doussard) is almost entirely greenway, flat and safe: the ideal family stretch. The eastern shore (Doussard to Menthon, Veyrier then Annecy) uses shared roads more, with a few climbs and more traffic. Many simply do an out-and-back on the western shore, just as enjoyable.

How long

  • Full loop (40 km): a good half-day to a full day, breaks included.
  • Western-shore out-and-back: 2 to 3 hours, as long as you like.
  • By electric mountain bike: the loop becomes easy and open to everyone, even with children or the eastern-shore climbs.

Renting a bike

No need to bring your own: you can easily rent classic bikes, e-bikes and mountain bikes in Annecy and around the lake, by the hour, half-day or day. Here’s our selection from our partner.

Good to know

Recommended direction. Many ride clockwise to keep the lake on their right and finish on the quiet greenway.

Early morning. In summer the greenway is very busy in the afternoon (walkers, skaters, families). Early on, you ride in peace.

Swim included. The route runs past beaches and coves: bring a swimsuit, water breaks are part of the fun.

With children. Stay on the western-shore greenway; the eastern shore, on roads, needs more care.
