Ardent waterfall in Montriond: the great Portes du Soleil waterfall

The Ardent waterfall is one of the finest natural sites of the Portes du Soleil. Above Lake Montriond, the stream tumbles down a rock band for nearly 30 metres in a roar of water and spray. Easy to reach, spectacular in spring and early summer when the flow is strong, it’s an unmissable stop in the area.

What you see

The waterfall drops below the hamlet of Ardent, visible from a built viewpoint a few minutes’ walk from the car park. A path lets you get closer to feel the spray. The site pairs easily with Lake Montriond, just below, and with the Ardent gondola that climbs towards Les Lindarets and the Portes du Soleil. It’s a short but striking stop, ideal for families.

Booking

The site is free to access, year-round. The viewpoint is reached in a few minutes from the Ardent car park; a path descends towards the foot of the falls. No booking needed; take care on the wet, slippery surroundings.

Good to know

When? The flow is most impressive in spring and early summer, during snowmelt.

Access. A few minutes’ walk from the Ardent car park to the viewpoint; a steeper path towards the foot.

Caution. The rocks near the waterfall are slippery: stay on the paths and hold on to children.
