Where to stay at Lake Annecy: areas and hotels

Annecy is one of the most sought-after destinations in Haute-Savoie, and in summer the good places fill up fast. Choosing where to stay comes down mostly to the area: the old town for charm and doing everything on foot, the lakefront for the view and the beaches, the east and west shores for quiet and nature. Here is how to decide for your trip, plus a hotel selection to book.

Choosing your area

The old town and the canals are the heart of Annecy: cobbled lanes, terraces, the market, everything on foot. It is the most charming and liveliest area, ideal for a short stay without a car. In return, it is the most expensive, the noisiest on summer evenings, and parking is hard.

The lakefront on the town side, around the Pâquier and the Jardins de l’Europe, puts the beach and the jetties a step from the centre. You find large hotels with a view over the water here. Annecy-le-Vieux and Albigny, just to the north, offer a quieter, more residential setting, with a beach and quick access to the centre on foot or by bike.

The east shore (Veyrier-du-Lac, Menthon-Saint-Bernard, Talloires) is the smartest: fine views, beaches, great restaurants, characterful hotels. It is pricier and a car becomes useful. The west shore (Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz, Duingt) is more family-friendly and more affordable: campsites, rentals, beaches and the greenway that runs along the lake. Finally, the station and Bonlieu area is handy for anyone arriving by train who wants to stay central.

When to book

Summer concentrates the demand. In July and especially August, book several months ahead for the best choice and prices. On the first Saturday of August, the Fête du Lac fills the town and pushes rates up: that is the night to plan furthest in advance. Spring and autumn are far quieter and cheaper, with a superb lake and terraces still pleasant. Winter stays mild in town, and Annecy then works as a base for reaching the Aravis resorts.

Getting around without a car

Annecy suits a car-free stay if you lodge in the centre or near the station. The train (Léman Express and regional lines), the city buses and the boats serve the lake’s edges, and the whole centre is walkable or cyclable along the greenway. The east and west shores, on the other hand, need a car or the seasonal buses: plan for it if you are aiming for Talloires or Duingt.

Which type of accommodation

The town mostly has hotels, from the large lakefront establishments to simpler addresses near the station. Rentals and apartments dominate in the old town and on the shores, handy for families or a long stay. Campsites cluster on the west shore, near the beaches, perfect in summer and for tight budgets. For a more special night, a few characterful hotels and tables with rooms round out the offer, on the heights or by the water.

Our hotel selection

For a stay right by the water or with a view, addresses like the Impérial Palace or Le Splendid on the lakefront, Les Trésoms and the Rivage & Spa for wellness, or Le Clos des Sens in Annecy-le-Vieux for a gourmet stop. For good value in a good location, sure bets such as the Ace Hotel, the Moxy, the B&B or the Hôtel du Nord. Availability and up-to-date prices show below.

Planning the rest of your trip

Once the accommodation is set, the rest follows: see the Annecy hub for activities, the lake and the old town, and the 3-day Lake Annecy itinerary guide to organise your days. For good tables and lake fish, the where to eat in Haute-Savoie page gives the markers. And to enjoy the water, it is all on the Lake Annecy page.
