The Tramway du Mont-Blanc is France’s highest rack railway. From Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet, it climbs slowly to the Nid d’Aigle (2,372 m), at the foot of the Bionnassay glacier. Running since 1909, it’s both a panoramic ride and the historic gateway to the classic Mont Blanc ascent.
The route
The tram leaves Le Fayet, runs through Saint-Gervais then Le Bettex, and climbs in switchbacks above the valley. The red carriages cross viaducts and alpine pastures, with the massif drawing closer at every bend. At the Nid d’Aigle terminus, a viewpoint over the Bionnassay glacier and the start of many hikes.
Summer or winter
- In summer (roughly mid-June to mid-September): the line runs up to the Nid d’Aigle. This is hiking season and the starting point for mountaineers heading to the Goûter hut.
- In winter: the tram serves Bellevue, linked to the Les Houches ski area.
Booking
The ticket is bought directly from the operator (Compagnie du Mont-Blanc), often as part of the Mont Blanc MultiPass if you combine several lifts (Aiguille du Midi, Montenvers, Brévent-Flégère). In summer, book your slot ahead: places are limited and the train fills up in good weather.
Good to know
It leaves from Saint-Gervais, not Chamonix. Allow about 45 minutes by road or train from Chamonix to Le Fayet.
Wrap up. At the Nid d’Aigle, above 2,300 m, it’s cool even in high summer.
For hikers. The terminus opens access to the Tour du Mont-Blanc and the climb to the Goûter; these high routes need experience and proper gear.
Check the weather. With no visibility, the ride loses most of its point.
