Skiing in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval: the Grand Massif and the Cascades run

Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is the most authentic face of the Grand Massif. A small village linked to the great area (around 265 km of pistes between Sixt, Samoëns, Morillon, Les Carroz and Flaine), it’s best known as the end point of the Cascades run, one of the longest in France.

The area

  • The Cascades run: around 14 km of descent from Flaine to Sixt, through wild scenery of gorges and forests. An experience to enjoy in good conditions, accessible to confident intermediate skiers, with a shuttle for the return.
  • The Grand Massif: from Sixt, you reach the whole linked area, from the family pistes of Morillon to the high-altitude sectors of Flaine.
  • The village spirit: Sixt keeps a quiet, preserved atmosphere, far from the bustle of the big resorts.

Winter, differently

Beyond alpine skiing, Sixt is also a high place of ice climbing: the walls of the cirque and the valley freeze in winter and draw climbers, led by the guides’ office. Snowshoe trails and the beauty of the cirque under the snow round out the winter offer.

Booking

Grand Massif passes are bought from the resort, online or at the lift ticket offices. For ice climbing or ski touring, contact the Sixt guides’ office. The Grand Massif pass covers the whole linked area.

Good to know

The Cascades run. Check its opening (snow conditions) and the time of the last return shuttle before setting off.

Altitude. Sixt is low (760 m); snow is less reliable here than at Flaine, which guarantees skiing at altitude on the area.

Ice climbing. A mountaineering discipline to be practised only with a professional and suitable gear.

Atmosphere. Sixt is a choice for those seeking quiet and authenticity rather than buzz.
