Paragliding above Chamonix lets you see the Mont Blanc massif the way climbers never do: from the sky, in silence, glaciers unrolling beneath your feet. The tandem flight is flown with an instructor and needs no experience. Just a few running steps at take-off, then you’re airborne.
The experience
A tandem flight usually lasts 20 to 40 minutes depending on the option. The instructor handles everything; you take in the view and, if you fancy it, a few sharp turns. Two main flight types:
- Discovery flight: the most accessible, ideal for a first time. Mid-altitude take-off, gentle glide down to the valley.
- High-altitude / cross flight: higher take-off, longer duration, maximum thrills and Mont Blanc panorama.
Take-off sites
- Le Brévent / Planpraz: a balcony take-off facing Mont Blanc, the postcard shot.
- Plaine Joux (Passy): a well-known site with open views of the range, often gentle conditions, great for first flights.
- Les Bossons / Chamonix valley: depending on weather and wind, the operator picks the best site of the day.
When to fly
From May to October, with the best conditions in summer. Flying depends on the weather: wind, cloud base and thermals decide. Operators confirm the slot on the morning itself if in doubt. Keep your half-day flexible.
Good to know
- No experience required. The instructor handles take-off and landing.
- What to wear: closed shoes (trainers), warm layer (it’s cooler up high), sunglasses.
- Weight: most operators accept a wide range; check the limits when booking.
- Indicative price: from around €110–120 for a discovery flight, more for a long flight.
